Our Food Box Experience: Short and Bittersweet

My last post was about the weekly food boxes we had been receiving full of delicious local produce. It was my intention to periodically write about our experiences with this food and to share some recipes. But alas, our supplier of food boxes, Culinarium, suddenly closed last week! This was completely unexpected news to us, and very disappointing. We had been thoroughly enjoying our food boxes.

Our final foodbox. Mushrooms, purple potatoes, yellow peppers, asparagus, flour, carrots, garlic flowers, strawberries, cheddar with garlic flowers, herbs, lettuce, radishes, tomatoes and rhubarb.

To make matters worse, we were not able to get refunds for the food boxes we had purchased in advance, because Culinarium is now bankrupt. However, we were able to use some of our remaining credit pick up a few final things at the store, and so we got some fun items that we would not normally buy.

We got a ton of random stuff, including shortbread, pickled garlic flowers, spicy chili Lankkaster Glengarry cheese and chokecherry jelly, which brought back memories of the chokecherry tree I had in my backyard growing up.

I was initially angry after hearing that we wouldn’t get our money back. But the owner was extremely apologetic, and in the end it is just a crappy situation all around. It really is too bad that Culinarium could not reach the critical mass necessary for success.

I don’t think we will be signing up for another food box program anytime soon. But I am really interested in checking out some different farmers markets across the city, and hope to visit a new one each week during the next month.

  1. I’m so sorry that happened to you. I think your strategy of sticking with the farmers’ market for a while is a good one. That way you can watch some of the stands and see who seems reliable and who has “critical mass” of members. Best of luck.
