Picking mulberries in Toronto

Three years ago while travelling in the area around Antalya, Turkey, I came across this mulberry tree.

Before this, my knowledge of mulberries was limited to Jesus telling the apostles that if they had enough faith they could tell a mulberry tree to uproot itself and go into the sea. I was pretty excited to eat the mulberries from this tree, and after returning to Istanbul I bought mulberries a few other times from the market.

I hadn’t eaten any mulberries since then, as I was woefully unaware that they grew in Ontario. But a couple of weeks ago, while walking on Avenue rd. in Toronto, I saw a mulberry tree! Or at least, I was pretty sure it was a mulberry tree, but because I didn’t realize they grew here, I was a bit unsure.  I went online and confirmed that yes, mulberries do in fact grow in Toronto, and since then I have been on the lookout for mulberry trees!

In the past few weeks I have seen them in a variety of places, including the Scarborough Bluffs and on Ward’s Island. But most excitingly, I found two trees in Alexander Muir Gardens, which is about a 10 minute walk from our apartment. I went and picked some on other day, and I plan on returning soon. They are delicious!
